New Canadian Encyclopedia Article: Roald Amundsen

Roald Amundsen led the first successful expedition by sea through the Northwest Passage in the Canadian Arctic, sailing aboard the Gjoa from 1903 to 1906. During the voyage, he learned Inuit dress and Arctic survival practices that would be crucial to the success of his future voyages. In 1911, Amundsen became the first person to reach the South Pole. In 1926, he travelled to the Arctic by airship as part of the first verified expedition to reach the North Pole.
