The wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in 2011 and Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012 revived many Canadians’ interest in the monarchy after decades of comparative indifference. In this course which combines lectures and discussions, learn about the long history of the monarchy in Canada and its marked influence on Canadian culture from the establishment of the first European settlements to the present day.  We will explore numerous little-known facets of Canada’s royal history. These will include the personal impact of the Kings of France on the development of what is now Quebec, Queen Victoria’s decisive role in Confederation, Canada’s royal tours and royal residents, and the changing portrayal of the monarchy in Canadian literature, popular culture and the media. What role do the Queen and her representatives really play in Canada’s political system today, and how has this role evolved? Is the monarchy still suited to Canada? Is it constitutionally feasible to replace it? Join us for a lively discussion of these and other questions.
